Discover Shabu House

If you’re craving interactive Japanese hot pot in the Bay Area, Shabu House at 1150 Paloma Ave, Burlingame, CA 94010, United States, is the kind of place that turns dinner into an experience rather than just a meal. Tucked into a convenient downtown Burlingame location, it’s become a go-to spot for locals who want fresh ingredients, customizable broths, and that comforting steam rising from a bubbling pot right at the table.

The first time I visited, I wasn’t just hungry-I was curious. Japanese shabu-shabu is more than soup; it’s a methodical, hands-on cooking style where thinly sliced meats and vegetables are swished through simmering broth. According to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, shabu-shabu grew popular in the mid-20th century as a communal dining format focused on premium beef and seasonal produce. That tradition shows up clearly on this menu. From thin-cut ribeye and tender pork belly to shrimp, tofu, napa cabbage, and udon, every ingredient is designed to cook in seconds, preserving texture and flavor.

One thing I appreciated right away was the clarity of the menu. You choose your broth-classic kombu, spicy miso, or a richer house blend-then select your protein and add-ons. It’s straightforward, which matters because hot pot can feel overwhelming for first-timers. The staff walked us through the process step by step: bring the broth to a gentle boil, cook vegetables first to build flavor, then swish the beef for about 10-15 seconds. That quick dip keeps the meat tender and juicy instead of overcooked. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference.

Food safety is another reason this cooking style appeals to many diners. The CDC emphasizes proper cooking temperatures for meats, and with shabu-shabu, you’re in control of the doneness. Watching the color change in the beef as it cooks in the broth gives you visual confirmation. It’s interactive and reassuring at the same time.

Flavor-wise, the quality stands out. The ribeye slices are marbled just enough to create that melt-in-your-mouth texture. I’ve tried hot pot in San Francisco and San Mateo, and what sets this place apart is consistency. The vegetables arrive crisp and vibrant, not wilted. The dipping sauces-ponzu with citrus notes and a creamy sesame blend-add contrast without overpowering the natural taste of the ingredients. In one visit, a friend who usually avoids red meat ended up ordering a second plate because the texture was so light and clean.

Reviews from regulars often mention portion size and value, and I can confirm it’s filling without feeling excessive. The combination sets typically include rice and a small salad, which balances the richness of the broth. If you’re extra hungry, adding noodles toward the end to soak up the infused broth is the move. That final bowl, packed with flavor from everything cooked before it, might actually be the highlight of the meal.

The atmosphere leans casual and relaxed. It’s not flashy, but that’s part of the charm. Families, couples, and small groups fit comfortably around the tables with built-in burners. Because each diner usually gets their own pot, it also works well for people with different dietary preferences. One vegetarian friend built an entire meal around tofu, mushrooms, leafy greens, and miso broth and didn’t feel like she was missing out.

Location-wise, being on Paloma Ave makes it accessible whether you’re driving through Burlingame or stopping after shopping nearby. Parking in the area can get tight during peak dinner hours, so arriving a little early helps. While the restaurant can get busy, especially on weekends, the turnover is steady since the cooking process is efficient.

If there’s one limitation, it’s that the space isn’t huge, so large parties may need to wait. Still, the focused menu and streamlined setup keep the experience smooth. From ingredient quality to attentive service and that satisfying, do-it-yourself cooking process, this spot delivers a dependable and flavorful hot pot meal that keeps people coming back for another round of simmering broth and perfectly swished beef.

  • Great place to go to with family of friends. Staff are nice and attentive. Meats are freshly sliced. We had the spicy tonkatsu and ginger chicken broth. Good for those cold winters.

  • As they say. If you want to know a good restaurant, go to where the locals go, and you won't go wrong. This restaurant has very interesting and tasty food. I had to ask how the shabu is made, given that what I got was raw meat and a lot of boiling soup. The minute I was shown how it worked, it definitely became a blast. I will be looking for Shabu houses in other locations.

  • Had dinner here as we were celebrating. Had the spicy miso and the chicken ginger broth. My partner liked the spicy miso a lot (I don't eat spicy) and I loved the chicken broth to the point of drinking it as soup. Ginger is just a hint, definitely not overpowering. For the meats we went for all beef pork and lamb, And my very favorite was the beef; he liked both beef and pork. We got 2 regulars but thought there was more than enough veggies and meat. $19.99 pp seemed fair although I'd love if it was cheaper (lunch is $16.99). AYCE is $33, which seems like a lot to me since regular or large should be enough for almost any person. The veggies includes some tofu, leaves, mushroom, and carrots. Also included is udon or rice, and green tea/red bean ice cream. I loved almost everything except for the ice cream, that I found very far from the supposed flavors. It also took forever for our pot to start boiling (didn't count but at least 10min, and we were starving) and we asked the waiter after 3min, they seemed to check on the boiler and say it was ok, but after 9min we asked again and that waiter said it was in the wrong setting...so... thanks for wasting us some time.

  • Very enjoyable hot pot place. We ordered 2 large dinner tray vs all you can eat for three people. The quality of meats was good and fresh, we picked beef and pork. Vegetables were plentiful, just wish they gave a little more udon noodles. Staff was polite and helpful. By the end of the meal, I was full and it was topped off with ice cream. Choices were mango, green tea, and red bean. I would for sure go again.

  • It was so good! Go with a bunch of people so everyone can share everything. I honestly choked during dinner, because it was really hot and didn't chew my food.... I threw up at the table and we all still finished our plates. 5 stars for sure!

  • First time at a Japanese style fondue restaurant. My friends all referred to it as a "hot pot" where we cooked our own beef, pork, or lamb with vegetables. A few styles of oil or broth and then put the meat and vegetables in the boiling pot and in one minute, you have cooked meat. Very good deal with the all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink driver option for 44 dollars!
